I went backpacking through Europe this summer and I would have to say Interlaken was my favorite by far. We liked the Funny Farm so much we doubled our stay much like many others. It has a wonderful "laid-back" atmosphere and still partys with the best of them at night. They even will set up Canyoning Trips, Bungy Jumping, and even Skydiving right at the front desk. The accomedations were also nice and clean. I definately plan on going back within the next 4 years. I give the funny farm 2 thumbs WAY UP and would recommend it to anyone. Any questions about hostels all over Europe... just email me.

You get stoned, then it's funny, and you're staying in a 'farm.' ah, I get it.

This place definately deserves it's reputation, great place to stay or hang out. While I was in Interlaken, I ended up staying (sleeping) at Balmers, but I mostly hung out at the Funny Farm. It's very laid back, volleyball court, pool, pot garden (yes, that's right) :) and run by some cool aussies and kiwis.

P.S. IF ANYONE HAS ANY PICTURES FROM THE FUNNY FARM, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THEM, THANKS.

OK, I have spent a lot of time at Funny Farm, and at Balmer's too. In a line, Balmer's is a frat house. Funny Farm is a hippy commune. Which atmosphere fits your personality more? Funny Farm is really friendly and fun, and it really is quite laid back, espeically considering the stringent rules that exist in Switzerland (e.g. whisper if you're outside after 10PM--- this is true, it's a national law!). That's why Balmer's is so strict. Neighbors will sue the hostels if they get loud at night, and they have to pay a big fine. So, Funny Farm expects you to respect your Swiss "neighbors," but they have a little more property that's farther off the street, so you can party a little later at night there. EVERYTHING is expensive in Switzerland, so the "expensive" food and beer at Funny Farm is really the best deal in Interlaken, especially if you take advantage of happy hours.

The place isn't squeaky clean... think commune or camping... but for those of you who are travellers, and are working your way around Europe... there are definitely worse.

Funny Farm works closely with AlpinRaft, an adventure company, and they are really great. Both businesses work together to get you booked in, and will give you a discount if you book more than one activity.

If you're laid back and fun and respectful and are not turned off by alcohol and marijuana, then this is the place for you. It's a really gorgeous setting and building!

I HAVE SPENT A LOT OF TIME IN AND AROUND THE FUNNY FARM FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS. I HAVE TO SAY THAT IF YOU DONT ENJOY YOURSELF THERE YOU WILL NEVER ENJOY YOURSELF ANYWHERE. IT IS PARIDISE WITH A POOL AND THE VIEW OF THE MOUNTAINS. IF YOU WANT PEOPLE TO BEND OVER TO HELP YOU AND KISS YOUR ASS THEN THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR YOU. THE SIGN AT THE ENTRANCE SAYS FOR TRAVELERS BY TRAVELERS NOT FOR BABIES BY BABIES.

I AM OUTRAGED TO READ ANY BAD REVIEW OF THIS PLACE BECAUSE IT SEEMS EACH SEASON(travel season if you are a wus) THE TRAVELERS ARE MORE SPOILED THAN THE NEXT. THE FIRST SUMMER I WAS AT THE FARM EVERYONE THAT WAS THERE WAS COOL AND HUNG OUT FROM READING THE REVIEWS ITA LIKE EVERYONE SITS AROUND AND WINES LIKE LITTLE BABIES. GET OUT THERE AND LIVE AND DONT LISTEN TO ANY REVIEWS OF THE FARM BUT MINE.

Funny Farm Sucks. The Funny Farm's contrived "laid back" vibe is belied by the rude and unaccomodating staff. Its not a laid back attitude; its just plain attitude. Interlaken is expensive, but the Funny Farm holds itself out as a cheap alternative for the budget back-packer. How do they reconcile that with their overpriced food and beer?!

Skip the Funny Farm. It sucks.

I don't know if Funny Farm is so much a hostel as it is an experience. However, don't ever use the words fancy or clean when describing this experience. You are sleeping in a barn, and the beds are old and shitty. However, this is a place for extremists and you will be picked up if you wish to thrill yourself to death about 30 metres from your room. Kick back by the pool and try the aqua climbing wall, but if you are offended by people smoking marijuana.... don't go here! It has a very Woodstock-type groove happening.

I went to funny farm just this past July. We stayed in a room that looks like a barn, the showers had no lights but disco balls instead because they are trying to save money on electricity, and the water was about 40 deg (F) so taking a normal shower was impossible. I can see how this place can be fun if you are not staying in the room that has 20 people with triple beds piled on top of each other but as a traveler on a budget we chose the cheapest room- it was moldy with tons of flies. They dont even give pillow cases for the disgusting pillows.

The Aussies who run this gorgeous hostel definitely know how to keep you entertained. Drinks in the fancy lobby after a day of skydiving or canyon-jumping makes a trip to Interlaken worth-while. Funny Farm offers a wide variety of rooms and extreme outdoor activities. Great fun!

What a great place to kick back and enjoy the Swiss Alps. Friendly people and a great campus (pool, volleyball, big screen TV at night, club/bar). If you like the Dead and friendly partying Aussies.....then this is the place to be. Even if you don't enjoy all the extreme sports that Interlaken has to offer, you will still enjoy staying at Funny Farm. I am definitely going back........and may look for summer employment there.
