This hostel was completely decent. We stayed in a four-person dorm room. Clean rooms, good free breakfast, clean bathroom on the floor. Nice view from the window in our room. Not in the city-center, but easy to get to on the bus... and in a SAFE location, which is important!

This hostel was absolutely fantastic! We arrived late in the evening in to Zurich and headed straight for the Tourist Information centre. We were told to take the tram to our hostel and bought a 24 hour tram pass (expensive but well worth it). With our little map we had no trouble finding the hostel and what a shock when we arrived! It was better than the hotels we had been staying in in Paris. The rooms were new, ultra-tidy, each room had its own ensuite (this was better than my house back in Australia), white fluffy towels & clean bedding was provided. The breakfast was interesting. We were told to eat as much as we can (quite different to being limited to certain amounts in London). The breakfast was juice, different coffees, cereal, yogurt, bread and what I thought was Brie cheese. It's true that the hostel wasn't within walking distance to the main area of Zurich however, there were still restaurants and shopping centres in the area. The hostel had a bar & also provided dinner at a price (quite reasonable considering how expensive Switzerland is). Someone had put too much money in the washing machine and dryer so we cleaned our clothes for free! If I return to Switzerland I will definately stay there again. I recommend it to everyone.

If you're looking for a quiet, low-key hostel, this is it. There's not much going on in the area and the atmosphere of this hostel is that there pretty much isn't one. Don't count on having any stores or restaurants that are open late. Everything closes early! We stayed in a private 2 person room and it was very clean and comfortable. My only gripe would be the Internet. The computers are located in the lobby and you have to pay to use them. Also, from the train station, you have to take a tram and walk. My friend and I almost died with our heavy backpacks and the heat.

I have a positive image of this place because of the cool people I met there but I would agree with a lot of what others have said. The hostel is a good 30 minutes away from all the action of central Zurich: walking is not an option. Positively, however, you can walk to the banks of Lake Zurich in about 10 minutes, which we did at 2am (barefoot!) which was great. BE PREPARED WITH FOOD AND BEER!! The supermarkets nearby close early... 4pm on a Saturday.. so get the stuff in! Overall, a decent hostel but nothing to rave about.

The hostel:

- is 5 mns walk away from Tram station

- which is 20 mns tram away from town center

- is located in Morgental (no activity at all after 6pm)

- looks like a USSR blockhaus

- is opened 24/24h

but at least:

- it is 10 mns walk away from a cool cultural center : die Rote Fabrik (www.rotefabrik.ch)

- there may be other things going on around zurich : www.ausgang.ch

This place is joke!!! Located out of the way of anything, a CHF - 24 taxi fare from the train station, and a good 10-15walk from the nearest restaurant, this hostel is very expensive for what you get. At CHF - 32, this place is very expensive compared to other european hostels. For this you get a dorm bed with a previously slept in doona and pillow. The internet access uses a 11kb/sec modem which gives you no warning you are out of money, and just cuts you off. Yes, I was at the end of a long letter.

Becareful of the bathrooms as well, because they use the time-out switches; you may end up sitting in the dark. I would not recommend this hostel to anybody. The City Backpacker was booked out (maybe that tells you something).

Tomorrow I will book a hotel, or maybe buy a tent.

Take tram No. 7 from the main railway station to the «Morgental» stop, then 5 minutes on foot to the youth hostel. Or take S-Bahn (suburban train) No. 8 to Wollishofen and then walk «over the hill» for 10 minutes to the youth hostel (follow signs).

There are a few (free) car and bus parking spaces behind the building.

The hostel is about 10 mins walk from the tram stop Morgenthal and the phones don't like the Ekit Access number. Zurich is expensive though. The Laundry is excellent though , but the dryer takes a long time to dry things. There is only one washer and one dryer for all of the people there. You buy the access from the Front Desk. I think it was 8CHF. It's not bad , but don't plan on having the greatest time there either.

The place feels like an orphanage. The walls are whitewashed, the bathrooms look like they are straight out of a public high school, and the rooms are as cramped as possible. All this for nearly twice as much as any other european hostel. The crowd is a strange mix of young asian travelers, families, elderly people, and a minority of european backpackers. If your funds are low, Zurich will kill you as well. A McDonald's salad is over 6 USD. It is a definately beautiful though.
