BUG review
This hostel is above a pub near the train station. The pub has a pool table and common areas downstairs include a small kitchen and a dining area/TV lounge. Accommodation is in very nice clean rooms with comfortable beds.

I stayed here one night in mid august 03. well, from the outside its quite the cute little hostel/pub. but we were openly made fun of walking in to the hostel (there was nothing weird about anyone on my small stray travel tour) and who i later learned was the propriotoress was laughing and gawking right along with them. we were stared and smirked at all through the pub interior, and we couldnt wait to get to the basement hostel area. the kitchen is clean, and the little area with tables and tv was great. but the whole basement smelled strongly of CAT (ok, cat piss), and i found out why later. when i picked up my folded topsheet, i found it was absolutely covered with cat hair, flea dirt, and cat food crumbs. yum. so i got another sheet and went to bed. about 11 pm the cat jumps in the open window onto its favorite bed, the one im sleeping in. for me it was a bit of a laugh (only because i was exhausted), but if you are allergic to cats you would have been in hell, and its a bit on the unhygenic side, eh? the showers had a very low ceiling, im 6'3", and i had to bend my knees so i had room to wash my hair. the showers instantly overflowed for no apparent reason. none of us complained about anything, as we didnt want to go through the pub unless we had to, it was like walking through some kind of gauntlet of unkind stares and welsh-tounged jeers. we were all completely boring unremarkable people, and didnt deserve that at all. its the only hostel in abergavenny (a very cute town) but be prepared for the cat and the unfriendliness.

...describes it just fine. we stopped in Abergavenny in august 2 years ago by chance. the hostel is just opposite the train station, so close you just try to overlook it. the hostel is not new and it shows, but clean (kitchen as well as the rooms) staff is friendly and the common area is fine too. so, if you happen to, well, end up in Abergavenny it is quite ok to stay there. its 4 stars because we would have had no problems to stay there longer
