I stayed in Mereani's backpackers in july 2007, which is behind the Ratu kini's bar, but closer to the beach than their dorms and much nicer than their dorms too.

Accodation: Mereani's can take about 50 people, but there was only 20 people max when i was there. Most of it is one big dorm, i got a 2 bed room, which was probably once a 4 bed... but there was a cardboard wall down the middle. haha, chatted the the guys next door all night. Its clean and organised, but dont expect much on an island. During the day the electricty is off, so the bathroom area is kinda dark. electricty is from 6pm to 7amISH. The showers trickle half rainwater and half seawater, and theres no heat. Its back to basics, but its such a great place it wont matter what the crappy showers are like.

Staff: Their amazing, very relaxed and helpful, they will make your stay easy and arrange fishing/islandhopping/boat transfere, anything. There was like a big family in Mereani's. And the Cava came out a lot.

Food: 3 meals a day at set times, great food, all cooked herself. fresh buns and cakes, fruit, currys. All good. Ratu kini's was just basic stuff, chips etc. And wasnt included in their price.

Area: Right on the beach near the pier, between the berlin wall of the resort and the locals village, Theres cool view points at either end of the island, and the survior set from TV. The beach and the snorkeling are really good around here. Theres watersports around too. In the evening everyone went to Ratu Kini's bar which is on the beach, theres fire dancing and all sorts most nights. There are two other backpacker places on the island, but their kinda small, i couldnt even find links to webpages for them. But there all in the same place anyway.

Go to Fji, get off the main island... its crap. Mana is only 45 min boat ride. Or Go to beachcomber, i didnt stay there, but i stopped there. Nice little island too. But defantly go to Fiji

Merianis hostel is pure paradise & very cheap with good rooms & tasty food. if you want paradise on a budget then look no further anywhere in the world. for snorkelling & scuba diving the beautiful coral reefs are fantastic. the local fijians are so friendly it takes a few days to believe they mean it!! but they do. make no mistake this hostel has everything you want with staff that make you feel like family
