nightmare, February 13, 2008
Reviewer: hostelgoer from NJ, USA

BEWARE fellow travelers. My wallet was stolen my first night there and Mike or "makiki" was extremely defensive and blamed me for losing it and "spreading negative vibes." Police were called and from what I was told this was not the first time. I write this out of regret not bitterness and hope this will not be censored and helps other travelers avoid having this nightmare happen to them. You can camp at Anini for 3 dollars a night and it is safer than this place. Avoid this place as it is not worth the risk of staying in a place where the manager is obviously on drugs. This is sad because Kauai is a beautiful island and most of the people are really cool.

I really enjoyed staying at this hostel. My dorm room was bright, new and clean, we had a bathroom in the dorm which was good. The common area outside was great for reading, chatting and eating. Excellent internet service (fast). The lounge room inside was so homely, there was a large kitchen with lots of appliances for cooking and plenty of room for everyone to cook at the same time. There are three large fridges so there is plenty of space to put your food. Cable TV was good too just for mindless TV watching after a long day doing nothing on the beach! Mikey the manager was sooooooo fantastic, I feel like he did alot for my sister and I, which he did! He was really warm, friendly, helpful and good to chat with. I was in a bit of a stress one day after missing my flight home but Mikey made me feel happy about staying a couple more days in Kauai and especially at the Kauai International Hostel. I met some lovely and interesting people and I had the most fantastic time in Kauai altogether. After 7 months of travel, my stay in Kauai was one of the highlights and the Kauai International Hostel had alot to do with that

Cons: Mike runs the hostel by himself, sometimes has to leave - like for buying food for sun night fest

Summary says it all - place was easy to find, close to heart of Kapa'a which is great access for south and north shores, beds were great - new memory foam on most of them - sheets were new and crisp, shower was clean, hot and good water pressure, other guests were friendly and also travelers. Mike has done a great job renovating the structure, infrastructure, and spirit of the hostel. It was safe, secure, clean, quiet, friendly. I look forward to visiting again and staying there.

The bed bugs are the freindliest thing in the hostel!, July 7, 2007

Pros: It's on Kauai
Cons: It is dead here, and not very friendly

Not the nicest place to stay, the cost and the fact it's on Kaua'i are attractive otherwise the whole approach is wrong, too laid back and yet full of rules at the same time. While the rules are no different to most hostels having them shoved down your throat at arrival isn't allt hat welcoming. Rooms are not terrible but they are not great either.

Hostel Manager's Right of Reply

We're writing this response in rebuttal to a malicious comment made by ****. This comment is entirely made to damage this fine establishment and is a complete "Bald Faced Lie". Thank you for reading our response. _ Management.

"The bed bugs are the friendlyest thing here!"

We feel this is an absolute attack on our establishment. The comment is entirely not true and is extremely damaging. The term "Bed Bugs" causes panic amongst potential visitors. "Bed Bugs" are tiny bugs that get into the lining of mattresses and produce multiple bites in "a line". The reason we provide clean sheets pillow cases and pillows is to prevent this. We don't allow personal bedding or sleeping bags on our beds. " We do not now nor have we ever had (Bed Bugs)". I believe **** knows this and is using the words to cause hurt and loss to our business. Why? I don't have any idea, I'm flabbergasted! In fact the bed **** chose and slept on is a brand new memory foam mattress. (Our Best). The strange thing is that **** didn't complain to the management (Maikiki) about "Bed Bugs" or anyone being unfriendly. (I opened the front gate for him as he came in one night). He told me "thank you". (Isn't that friendly)? I say "strange" because his review came as a total and complete surprise to us. I (Maikiki) preformed the check-out my-self, returned Donal's key deposit, and said Aloha. He said "Thank You" once again and left. No complaints! Verena_Staff who checked him in is a wonderful woman with high morals and had just started helping here. Her first day! She doesn't even know our house rules very well yet. **** said she "Shoved the rules down my throat at check-in". I refuse to believe this for even an instance. When Verena read this she was almost in tears. **** was her first check-in and it upset her to think she did something wrong. She didn't do anything wrong and it does seem that **** and BugBackpackers share the same ability to hurt others wile avoiding the "TRUTH" For some reason(s) unknown.
(Does **** work for you? Or write reviews for you? Or is he related to someone working for BugBackpackers.com? The MOTIVE. seems to be the same).
The fact is after asking the staff and remaining guest about Donal, the general consensuses was that **** was very much to him-self. A loner. He left early and returned late. **** didn't attempt to "Make Friends" with anyone. When he implies "Not Friendly" it's not true! Staying in his room was **** (JAPAN), **** (BRAZIL), **** (GERMANY_STAFF), **** (USA), John Nell (AUST) all very nice friendly people. ****l didn't come to the common area or stop to talk at all to anyone! (Who's the one not being friendly)!
