BUG Review
In many ways Nouméa's youth hostel feels a lot like many French or German youth hostels with an institutional design and a dated feel to it, but it is the cheapest place in town with helpful and friendly staff and the best view in Nouméa. The concrete buildings are dated and could do with a renovation but the hostel is clean. Accommodation is in four and six-bed dormitories and common areas that include a kitchen, table tennis and a TV lounge with a big plasma screen and internet access, including (pay) Wi-Fi, on the top floor. There is also a lovely garden area overlooking the city. The hostel is on a hill above the cathedral with access via stairs at the end of rue Jean Jaurès and it has a brilliant view of the city centre, the Quartier Latin and Baie de Moselle.

It's great. I took a school trip with 13 kids from New Zealand there in 2004. They loved it. It's organised, accommodating of people's needs and friendly without being too friendly. The staf are great and interact well with people who have limited French and they are excellent at teaching it if you want to learn. All in all, a safe clean place. Highly reccommmended!! (but do book WELL ahead as fills up quickly during Australian and NZ school holidays)
