BUG Review
This is the better-maintained of the two YHA hostels in town. The Auckland International YHA can’t quite escape the institutional character of the building itself, but a bright, open dining area/lounge and excellent kitchen facilities (including a sandwich press) make up for it. There’s also a cosy TV room, air hockey table, and on-site travel and employment assistance. Rooms are clean and tidy and kept in good shape. Limited parking is available if reserved in advance.

Price
Dorm bed $23-$29 ($20-$26 HI/YHA)

Large hostel; no atmosphere & could be cleaner, September 12, 2006

This is a large hostel lacking atmosphere like some of the smaller privately run hostels in NZ. The kitchen is well kept and clean with large fridges for storage. The bedrooms are kept clean but the bathrooms need improving; showers are poor. Toilets need sorting out - constant smell of stale urine which had a poor attempt by staff to be disguised by copius amounts of air freshner!! If your room backs onto the main street outside prepare to get little sleep - 'boy racers' sit outside revving engines and playing load music all night!!

I stayed at the YHA international at the very end of my 7 month journey within New Zealand. It was a great place to get a good shower, and a great sleep. The beds don't creak (although they shake a bit if you sleeping on the top)... and the Kitchen is all that a backpacker would ever want. Big fridges, lots of pots and pans. the works. Ive stayed at other places in Auckland, and this one beats all the other ones by a long shot

I have to admit it is clean and safe, but they are not honest!!! I have paid for six nights in advance, and after four days they asked me and my mother to leave saying we have paid just four nights. They realised the mistake just some weeks after, when we received the money back on our credit card, but it was very disappointing.

Although rates are a little high ($25 NZ for an 8 bed dorm) this hostel is unlikely to dissapoint. Cleaning standard is very high and you never have to queue for a shower/toilet. Beds are comfortable and 24 easy hour access is a blessing.

Although entry to the hostel is very secure, there is no in-room security and the lockers available are rediculously expensive. Lockers in the rooms would go a long way to making hostel better!

Only downsides were distance from city centre (20 minute-ish) walk and the lack of proper fans/AC in room. Very hot and stuffy at night.

Oher than that top class hostel!

We stayed in an ensuite double, which was fine, the TV in our room was an added bonus. Overall a good hostel, with a great location but no parking so we had to be up and out by 7am to avoid a ticket!!

This hostel is great in every way, except that it could be a bit cleaner. It is still clean but I think the hosteller:bathroom ratio is a bit high. But rooms are really nice, very very clean and convenient. Rest of hostel is great!

Nov 2003 - Right in the centre of town, near Queen Street, very clean, big kitchen. Quite pricey and you have to pay for parking - which you will need to book in advance - parking is a nightmare in Auckland.
