BUG Review
This hostel is a former apartment building and accommodation is in self-contained apartments, each with a small lounge area. Although there is a bigger common room on the first floor, the self-contained nature of the place keeps people in their rooms, so it doesn’t have much atmosphere.

Good for drinking, bad for sleeping!, January 28, 2007

My first hostel on arriving in NZ. Its on Fort Street, which is a pretty seedy area of town, but a lot of the other big hostels are here as well. On the plus side is the bar, which is busy and sociable, and also the free meal deal. On the down side, the dorm rooms are dark and very hot (certainly the four-bed I was in) and unfortunately they are directly connected on each floor to a communal kitchen and seating area; which means that sleep is pretty hard to come by. Cleaning is regular, but a bit slapdash and the bathrooms always seemed a bit manky. On returning to Auckland I used Base down the road, which had less atmosphere but felt cleaner.

The bar provides nightly entertainment and activities and is a great place to meet other travellers. The activities give you an opportunuity to win prizes! There is a free meal every night which is great for backpackers on a budget! Reception is 24hours and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I definately reccomend the Fat Camel when you want to stay in Auckland.

Close to Queen Street and clubs/bars

was generally ok as stayed 6 nights. Had a few complaints which were sorted but room not cleaned and no towels with just an im sorry we cant do anything wasnt good enough. 4 rooms sharing kitchen and bathroom, good but last night when 3 people decided to sing loudly at 3am in the communal area! Girl on reception was really friendly, helpful and funny so that helped. Having the bar was good and free small hot meal every night is a great idea. They do tournaments most nights in the bar giving away prizes, but I get the impression the longtermers win them everytime. Most people in the bar seemed to work there!!!
