Bamber House offers a range of accommodation in a pair of houses set on large grounds in Mount Eden. The main house is a strikingly handsome colonial home with exposed beam work, fine furnishings, and well-preserved period details. Features include a book-filled common room and a great kitchen. It’s simply overflowing with character. The second house doesn’t have the charm of the first – as it’s more recently-built – but it is also meticulously clean and comfortable. Lots of outdoor space, including a barbecue area and a trampoline, add to the appeal. There’s a swimming pool as well, but it had been covered over and was being used as a sundeck when we visited; its future is uncertain. Bamber House is one of the superior hostels in Auckland, a very appealing alternative to staying downtown.
Price Dorm bed $25-$28 ($22-$25 BBH) Single room $38 ($35 BBH) Double/twin room $60-$66 (BBH $54-$60) Prices are in New Zealand dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.

From what I hear, Auckland is not everyone's favourite place. But the tendency for not liking Auckland really depends on where you stay. People who stay in the bigger hostels directly in the city centre are often really disappointed, which is to be expected 'cause we all know what the city hostels can be like. I, on the other hand, got a really good impression of Auckland. And it think it's because I stayed at a hostel that wasn't so much in the city centre. Bamber House is neat hostel. It's big (2 houses) without being too big (but there are always lots of people around), clean, and quite mellow. The kitchen is stocked and clean. The common room has 2 computers for internet, lots of couches, a tv/dvd (if you like that) and a fish aquarium (highly entertaining). The hostel is a 5 minute busride to the city centre, but you can walk if you like. I think the walk is about 1/2 hr or so. And Mt. Eden is a really nice neighborhood, with quite a few good cafes, groceries, produce stores, specialty stores, etc... Very relaxing area and pretty much puts a spin on the whole 'Auckland sucks' bit that I keep hearing. Good hostel, two thumbs up.

Stayed here for 4 nights and found it to be very relaxing. It was quite tough to find a carparking space at times, but if you do not have a car a bus-stop is just over the road that will take you to Auckland city centre. I would recommend Bamber house for those that want a quiet rest from the hustle and bustle of the city.

We stayed at Bamber house in December, 2004. We had a double room right by the main entrance so it could get a little loud at night and in the early morning. The kitchen and main rooms were pretty decent. The bathrooms where fairly clean which is always something we look for in a hostel. We really enjoyed the helpful staff, being away from the city center, and the ability to check email for a small fee. The location may be a little too remote, depending on what you want to do in Auckland, if you don't have your own transportation.

i had been staying at auckland central backpackers in the heart of auckland. the commotion of the city was way to overwhelming for me. so i moved to the bamber house in mount eden (just 10 minutes outside the city). this hostel is beautiful. the perfect place to retreat. the owner is exceptionally accommodating. i needed a ride and he actually picked me up in his car to take me to the bamber house. the guests that i met were very friendly and some of the funnest people i met in new zealand.
