You might think you’ve gone too far as you wander among massive car dealerships on the way to New Zealand Backpackers. But there it is; one of only a few houses on a small side street in this unlikely location right above Karanghape Road. Still, you aren’t staying here for atmosphere, because there is none. It’s a former rooming house now doing business as a backpackers, but it hasn’t lost the doss house feel – dark and unkempt and a little bit disheartening. It is cheap, though – very cheap. And it’s close to the junction of Ponsonby and K Roads.
