Mount Backpackers is a small, basic hostel, well located right in the heart of Mount Maunganui’s commercial stretch just a couple of minutes from the beach. There are only a few rooms: a pair of six-bed dorms, a four-bed dorm, and one nine-bed dorm, which is kind of crowded but has a very high ceiling and a skylight, so it feels airier. There’s a small central courtyard with picnic tables and a TV room with an Xbox. An internet café downstairs has plenty of coin-operated internet PCs.

Double room $70 ($60 BBH)
