Lyons Lakestay, is a small eight-bed house located across the road from Lake Okareka, about 12km from Rotorua city centre. It’s a peaceful and very well-maintained place, with much more of a home stay or bed and breakfast feel than a hostel. Rooms are cosy and nicely appointed. The small kitchen and sitting room are pleasant, and there’s a lovely garden out front with organic produce; the owners are very eco-conscious and into promoting sustainable tourism. This makes an interesting alternative to staying right in Rotorua; for one thing, the (in)famous sulphur smell doesn’t make it out here. There are lots of walking and biking trails around and lake activities on Okareka and other nearby lakes. Lyons Lakestay provides free pick-up from town.
