BUG Review
Charlie B’s is in a restored old building with nice furnishings and a grand old staircase. There are three floors of huge, clean dorms with brand new carpet. Bathrooms (which are all mixed) are newly renovated and spotless. There are two (large screen) TV lounges with Sky TV and heaps of free DVDs to watch. There is also a games room with a nice piano and pool table. The outside garden is tranquil and has lots of tables and seating. The kitchen is brightly painted, well equipped, and has a café attached with cheap pizza and snacks. This is one of the better places to meet people, and has a good location next to a park. Reception staff are friendly.
Price Dorm bed $20-27 Single room $55 Double/twin room $65 Prices are in New Zealand dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.

Stayed in a double room, great plus for the spacious room, free towel and soap and of course the TV! The kitchen area and the atmosphere is great, unfortunately a big minus has to be placed for the lack of freezer.Location is not too bad, it's about 10min walk to cathedral square and I found it to be a quiet place, no problems with traffic or anything like that.The big drawback this place has is that it doesn't offer enough toilets, in our area there was only 1 toilet and only 2 showers (unisex) for I don't know how many rooms.....many times you had to queue for your turn or just try to find another one on a different floor.

We loved this hostel, they have fantastic deals on your stay! They have a longe room/ games room with a huge selection of DVDs and videos! Then they have another massive room with a huge screen television that hooks up to sky tv with lounge chairs! The kitchen was the best, themed like a chef's kitchen, very spacious with walk-in-fridge. You didn't have to pay extra for your utensils, all was provided and lots of room to move around. The garden was very pretty and the rooms were great! Charlie B's is definately the best and is a 5 min walk from city centre. Loved it!

I would have to say that this place seems to be one of the better options in Christchurch.It has brand new bathrooms which always seem to be quite clean. The staff are super friendly even when you wake them at 12am to check in, and every morning a tray of muffins or cake appears at the front desk for the guests.The common areas are very good as well. The outdoor area is a good quiet place to have a bbq. or sit in the sun & read. The place has 2 TV's, one has a video player and a pretty good selection of movies to watch, the other is connected to Sky TV. There is also good, cheap internet connections available & a kitchen.The hostel is located about 3 mins walk to the intercity bus terminal & 5 mins to Cathederal Square.The only thing I can fault the place on, is the road noise from Madras St. which seems to be used as a drag strip at night. I was on the 2nd floor & it was still enough to wake me up at times. If you can get past this, then this place is an excellent option.

Had a superb time at this hostel, staff could not have been more welcoming, the hostel was clean with good facilities and best of all they had a female only dorm (very spacious).Stayed next door(1 night), paid a lot more for a room that had far to many beds crammed in and the staff were sooooo rude.Christchurch is a nice place, only planned on spending 2 nights but found so much to do so stayed 4. Highly recommend Charlie B's to all and make some extra time to see Christchurch, its so pretty and laid back.

I disagree with everything the last 2 reveiws have said. I checked out of Charlie B's thismorning and I have had the best time in one of the cleanest backpackers around. Check out Queenstown for flee pits, out of the three I tried they all were dirty and charged the earth to be put in nothing more than a closet + bed bugs galore. Charlie B's is not the flashest, but it is the cleanest and friendliest. I arrived in NZ at 6am 3 weeks ago, they checked me in straight away , I didnt have to wait around tired until check in time. I went to Hamner for 2 nights, they stored my luggage free of charge, helped me with rental cars and were just so helpful, nothing was a bother, they actually restored my veiws of New Zealander people. If you dont need fancy trimmings but want a good, clean, friendly accommodation at a fair price - This place has my recommedation.

This place is definitely a flea pit. I stayed one night and could also feel my skin crawling. This is the worst hostel I have stayed at during my week long trip around the south island. The showers, toilets, and kitchen are not very well cleaned and the place is a bit rundown. There must be better places to stay at in Christchurch.

I am at Charlie B's as we speak it is 4:45am and I feel like my skin is crawling. I have had a shower but there are bed bugs galore and the fowlest smell ever. Please do yourself a favour and save your skin!! I am waiting until 6am and getting the hell out of here. I am booked for another night, if I am unable to get a refund then so be it. I prefer to lose a few dollors rather than my sanity!!

I had an ok time here for my 2 night stay. The staff were friendly and helpful. However, it was a bit big and impersonal. There was nothing really very special about this place, apart from the lovely sunny garden. I expect, to be honest though, there are better places to stay in Christchurch.
