You never know what you're going to get with hostels, especially ones that fall outside of the hostel chains like YHA or Base.

New Excelsior was a delightful surprise after going on a one month lookaround of New Zealand. It's not a large hostel but it looks like home and feels like home. The common areas are conducive to conversation and the kitchen is well-stocked with various cooking areas and storage areas. The area is spotless so you feel inspired to leave the place even cleaner than the way you found it.

A walk into the central part of town is short. I liked the fact that there is no bar attached. This means you can party elsewhere and then come home and get some good sleep. I think that this was one of the gems in Christchurch.
