You never know what you're going to get with hostels, especially ones that fall outside of the hostel chains like YHA or Base.New Excelsior was a delightful surprise after going on a one month lookaround of New Zealand. It's not a large hostel but it looks like home and feels like home. The common areas are conducive to conversation and the kitchen is well-stocked with various cooking areas and storage areas. The area is spotless so you feel inspired to leave the place even cleaner than the way you found it.A walk into the central part of town is short. I liked the fact that there is no bar attached. This means you can party elsewhere and then come home and get some good sleep. I think that this was one of the gems in Christchurch.
