We stayed here twice. The first time, we had a private ensuite room in the main building, which was very nice! The second time, we had bunks in the lodge, which had been cut and welded to make smaller to fit tiny mattresses and squeaked like crazy (make sure you have earplugs)! It's a very nice place and I would definitely stay here over the other hostels in Christchurch, but if you can, make sure you get beds in the main building. I think the non ensuite private rooms are also in the lodge, so it's worth paying the extra $5. The happy hour and bar is good and the pizzas are awesome!

nice change from a regular hostel, March 2, 2006
Reviewer: louised from England

Pros: TV, safe, aircon + fridge in room (twin, shared facilities)
Cons: a little pricey.

We had a great room but we did have the end room which seemed larger than the others. Having our own TV was great as was the personal safe in the room, air conditioning and fridge. We had a regular standard twin with share facilities. I think this is more of a budget hotel than a hostel so the receptionists were all quite formal and lacked the friendliness ive found in other places. The showers were plentiful but still seemed always busy and a bit unclean on occasion. The beer was cheap and they order out for pizzas for you. The location is ok, about 10 mins walk from cathedral square. Great security system - door codes change daily and personal safe.

Dorm room was baking hot, December 16, 2005

I have stayed in this hostel a few times in the last few weeks. The first couple of times was during cooler weather and I thought the hostel was great and had no complaints. The third time I stayed there was a completely different story. The weather was quite mild outside (certainly not a hot day) but the upstairs dorm rooms were sizzling hot, there was no airconditioning and no air in the room. It was extremely uncomfortable for all the guests in the dorm. Staff at reception were aware of the problem and did not cooperate when a room change was requested. It was very much a 'tough luck' attitude. Very disappointing. I would not recommend this accomodation during the milder months of the year.
