BUG Review
Coachman Backpackers is a good hostel in a solid old building right behind Cathedral Square. It has an old world feel with dark rich colours when you enter the foyer and acsend the staircase but the dorm rooms and bathrooms are much brighter and better maintained. The dorms have high ceilings, which make them feel more spacious than they actually are and the metal bunkbeds are made up with real inner spring mattresses. The common area is a big dark room with a big TV in one corner and there is also a bar, internet access and a pool table.

Price
Dorm bed $25-28 ($22-25 BBH)
Single room $63-73 ($60-70 BBH)
Double room $66-76 ($60-70 BBH)

Prices are in New Zealand dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.

Stayed 2 nights there, in a 4-bed dorm. Very clean, great communal area, 2 kitchens, and the owner is really friendly.

A place I strongly recommend, all the more so as it is located 20 metres from Cathedral Square.

nothing special - just a place to sleep, July 2, 2006

This place was nice but nothing special. It had a nice lounge area and a big TV, but it was so spacious that people kept to themselves and didn't really chat.

The rooms had there own bathroom (which were pretty new), but the bunkbeds were fairly basic and the windows were old and hard to shut (so the rooms got cold at night). Besides that, it was a good place to just rest and sleep.

Our first stop in New Zealand was a treat. We didn't arrive until after midnight, but the host was very welcoming and we had a great stay. We decided to return for 3 days and really enjoyed the cooking facilities and lounge room...and met some really cool backpackers!

Stayed in the Coachman on the Square Backpackers for 1 night in November 2005. Got a large double ensuite room for NZ$80, included towels and linen. Owner was very friendly, he even lent the wife a hair dryer. Ideally located just around the corner from the square and its within easy walk of everything. They also had their own bar. Only problem was there is a bar across the road that was open all night. We were woken up a couple of times with the noise of people outside the bar but other than that it was perfect. I would stay here again.
