Footprints in the Sand is a small hostel right down the road from the beach. It consists of a double room in a home stay and a separate nine-bed dorm in a cottage (another four-bed structure was being built on the site when we visited). There are also camping facilities in the big backyard, which has flowers and fruit trees (lemon and feijoa) growing in it. It’s a simple place, but clean, recently renovated and well-maintained. The owner is very friendly and arranges fishing charters as well a traditional Maori flax weaving lessons. Kayaks and bikes are also available for hire.

Prices are in New Zealand dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.
