This unique hostel is housed in New Zealand's oldest prison, which operated between 1862 and 1997. The building has plenty of character but some travellers may find it a little spooky. Facilities include the usual kitchen, TV lounge and laundry but accommodation is a little basic and parts of the hostel are a bit shabby - it is a prison after all. The friendly staff are full of interesting information about the prison and guests get a free prison tour (valued at $10).
Price Dorm bed $23-25 ($20-22 BBH) Single room $43 ($40 BBH) Double/twin room $56 ($50 BBH) Prices are in New Zealand dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.
OK for a night as it was kind of interesting but the whole place seemed dirty and old. Outside toilets, barely private showers. Just a bit skanky really. We headed to the Criterion Hotel which is was the complete opposite of the prison, great atmosphere, clean, luxury, town centre.

As it is the oldest prison in New Zealand, it's kinda cool to say you stayed here once, but it's a prison, and it's a bit depressing - barbed wire for decoration, outdoor bathroom facilities with little privacy, you get the gist. Overall facilities weren't that great.
