BUG Review
Well, it’s original. This hostel is set in New Zealand’s oldest prison, which operated from 1862 to 1993. It’s got quite a bit of atmosphere, to say the least, which you’ll either like or be spooked out by. There’s definitely a morbid sense of humour around the place – for instance, laundry is hung out to dry in the actual old hanging yard. Facilities include a big TV room, internet access, a pool table and some gym equipment (this was a prison, after all). Rooms are very basic, as you might expect, and the whole place shows its years; which, again, is either part of appeal or something that will drive you away. If you dig the idea of sleeping in an old cell with prison graffiti still carved into the walls, this might be your place. But check ahead if they’re taking bookings: when we visited, the hostel was booked out for the entire summer by seasonal workers. Guests get to take the prison tour at a discounted rate.

OK for a night as it was kind of interesting but the whole place seemed dirty and old. Outside toilets, barely private showers. Just a bit skanky really.

We headed to the Criterion Hotel which is was the complete opposite of the prison, great atmosphere, clean, luxury, town centre.

As it is the oldest prison in New Zealand, it's kinda cool to say you stayed here once, but it's a prison, and it's a bit depressing - barbed wire for decoration, outdoor bathroom facilities with little privacy, you get the gist. Overall facilities weren't that great.
