BUG Review
This recent addition to the Base family (it was formerly the Pipi Patch Lodge) keeps up the Base tradition of being a social, party-oriented hostel. Dorm rooms themselves are clean and all come with en suite bathrooms. There’s a relatively small common room with a TV a sunny little outdoor deck. The attached Pipi Patch bar has a castaway, beach-bum vibe, decorated as it is with driftwood, barrels, fishing nets and the like. Most evenings, it’s one of the more thumping party spots in town. Other facilities include a swimming pool, spa pool, free use of bicycles and access to the nearby tennis court.

Very nice place, spacious dorm rooms with ensuite bathrooms. Five minutes from the beach, with a good bar and cheap barbecue every night, and some other good bars and restaurants nearby. Kitchen and TV/Internet area quite small, but that's a minor issue. Staff office closes quite early which can be a pain if you're trying to organise anything.

I just stayed 1 night also and also, I found the rooms being outside a problem as it rained the whole time. The room was cramped, bathroom tiny but clean.

It seemed too small for the amount of people staying there (the kitchen got cramped and there was nowhere left to sit to watch tv), but it was friendly and conveniently located.

The only downside to my stay was the weather. Paihia is a beautiful place, in the Bay of Islands, and thus has a number of hostels to pick from. Pipi Patch was my home only for 1 night, but I had a good time there. The rooms are a bit cramped, but clean enough, and the staff are a nice bunch of Kiwis. There is a bar at the hostel too, but this can be a bit small when there are a lot of people staying. The only downside is that the rooms are entered from the outside in a motel style, so you have to go out in the rain to get back to them from the bar.
