BUG Review
The Mural is easy enough to spot, with its bright orange façade and location right on Whangarei’s main street. Inside, you’ll quickly discover where its name comes from – walls are covered in an eclectic mix of paintings, all done by backpackers. The quality ranges, as do the themes – there’s sci-fi, fantasy, beach scenes, and more on display. The building itself is deceptively large – it seems like a one-storey affair at street level, but it goes down, down, down a few floors to a big, very cool bar called Ibanez and backs onto a great outdoor courtyard with a wood-burning pizza oven. There’s a true backpacker spirit to the place, with communal activities like the wall-painting, shared dinners, group outings, and more. No surprise to learn that one of the managers actually grew up in a hostel – she’s got a lot of good ideas about how to run a place. The Mural is a very interesting addition to a town that’s been somewhat overlooked on the backpacker trail.
