Black Sheep Lodge is a well maintained hostel with great facilities and a young, energetic vibe. The beds are comfortable and made up with nice blue sheets and duvets. There are tidy bathrooms and a large kitchen with new appliances plus a cosy, spacious common room with Sky TV, a pool table, and a bar and a large outside deck with a spa pool. It is around 500m from the centre of town. They offer free breakfast and a free beer with any activity booking.

I have travelled all over New Zealand and found the Black Sheep to be one of my favourite hostels. The staff were really friendly and immediately made me feel at home. The facilities are great for a hostel, and the complimentary breakfast was a great perk. I Loved the way most of their rooms were 4 share. I would fully recommend it to anyone that is looking for a comfy bed, a clean place to stay and to meet other backpackers. The TV room is cosy with the fire and great place to chill when you're skint or hungover!. Its a home from home, go the BS staff you are doing great - Mandella x

7 minutes away from the main madness of Queenstown, April 6, 2006

The hostel has a "spider spraying campaign" that is just a silly way to get guests to clean up their dorms. I really disliked being treated like a silly child and having to jump through all the hoops for the "spider sprayers" especially since I was the only person in a dorm, I had a small 8 kilogram backpack and it was my second night there. To top it off they didn't even clean out the garbage left, next to the gargage can, in the corner by the previous guests. The spider campaign blighted my stay!

Other than that it's an OK place to stay. Rooms can be noisy as people spill out of the kitchen and sit on seats right outside your dorm if you are downstairs.

Don't stay in the downstairs room in front of the washing machines because things go bump in the night there. Waking, freezing,in spite of the warm summer, in the middle of the night in my locked room to feel a man hitting my feet and see him looming over me was not the highlight of my NZ trip! My first and hopefully last ever ghostly experience. Apart from that, fine!

I didn't like this place too much. It is slightly dirty, and because it is a former motel, the rooms are only accessible from the outside - this means that you have to step outside (which is quite annoying if it is winter or raining) if you want to go to the toilet, showers or reception. I also disliked a bit that showers & toilets are in the same room, so even if you just go to the shower you are often annoyed by certain smells... but this deficiency is shared by many hostels. On the plus side, the hostel has 24hour reception and very friendly staff.

I stayed here for three nights in 2001 and was very pleased with the place. The bedrooms were secure and clean, if not a little small. The kitchen facilities were good and the sitting room was excellent with a massive TV and video, a selecttion of films (for when it's too wet to go outside!) and alcohol on sale! A great stay with a warm atmosphere
