BUG Review
Nestled into the hillside about 2km south of Manapouri are five stout cabins and a main house that make up Freestone Backpackers. They were all built by the owner and each has a kitchenette, a pot-belly stove and handsome wooden furnishings. The communal showers and toilets are like-new, and there is a TV lounge in the main building. Views are stunning from everywhere, but are best enjoyed lounging on the small veranda fronting each dorm. There are also laundry facilities and a barbecue area.

This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.

Really lovely, different type of backpackers. Instead of rooms there is individual lodges sited on a hillside with the most spectacular views of Lake Manapouri and mountains. The lodges are so cosy and come with kitchen, fire stove, beds and porch with comfy seats so you can lap up the scenery. No TV but you don't need it!
Jimmy the host, is so friendly and helpful. He sorted us with a really good deal for Doubtful Sound.
If you are staying in Manapouri, don't stay anywhere else :)
